Joe married Rita Hackman April 13, 1948, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, and to this union five children were born: Shirley, Allan, David, Ann and Leon. Together, Joe and Rita farmed near Fort Atkinson their entire life raising crops and milking registered Jersey cattle, and later raising Angus and Simmental beef cattle. Joe had a passion for music. Joe loved to play cards, fish, ride motorcycle and spend time with his family. Joe was a long-time Farm Bureau member and received a plaque for his 50th year of membership in 2000.
