Kenneth Haldain Grimes

Kenneth Haldain Grimes, 77, originally from Eldorado and retired near Decorah, died March 15, 2016.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Eldorado, with committal to follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 18, at the church. Iowa Cremation Service is providing arrangements.

Ken was born Sept. 18, 1938, in the family home in Eldorado, the son of Boyd Haldain and Helen (Lauer) Grimes. He graduated from West Union High School in 1956, and served four years in the Air Force, three of them in Europe. Ken married Janice Borness April 2, 1961.

He worked at Rath’s Experimental Swine Farm and farmed near Elkader, prior to moving to Eldorado. He was the Outstanding Young Farmer of Fayette County and spent countless hours involved with the Holstein Association.

He was a 4-H Leader, and a member of the Wisconsin Dairies Board of Directors and Iowa Dairy Association Board.

He also was a member of the Farm Bureau, DHIA, West Union Co-op Board, Saddle Club and supported the local FFA. He spent several years as a square dance caller.

After retiring from farming, he and Janice enjoyed traveling the U.S. for 11 years working for Pharmaceutical Innovators Limited. Following his retirement and move to the Decorah area, he enjoyed tractor rides on his Oliver and was on the Board of Rivers and Bluff Classic Tractor Club.
He made great friends and never tired of reminding them they were on the “wrong green tractor.” Trips to Branson and his dog Koko also provided joy in his retirement years.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. Ken loved his family and attending countless sporting and music events across the State. He also loved riding horses, camping and showing dairy cattle at the fair.

Ken’s family includes his three children: Kyle (Marilee) Grimes of Sibley; Kristi (Buck) Hall of Sandy, Utah; and Kraig (Terri) Grimes of Sumner; grandchildren: Jason (Bryanna) Grimes, Cody Grimes, Kramer, Brooke and Megan Grimes, Logan and Garrett McGrane, Bethany (Justin) Stafford; and great-grandchildren: Blaire Grimes, Alivia and Kinzley Stafford.

Ken is survived by his mother, Helen; brother, Allen (Pat) Grimes; sister, Cheryl (Ron) Flaa; mother and father-in-law, Einar and Jennie Borness; sisters-in-law: Joanne (Justin) Roney, Lorraine (Chuck) Wangsness; brother-in-law, Dave (Diane) Borness and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.
