We are regretful to report the untimely passing of Kenneth “Ken” G. Jensen, 83, of Decorah, June 30, 2020.
Kenneth George Jensen was born Oct. 8, 1936, in West Union, the son of Richard Kenneth and Vivian “Pede” (Tupper) Jensen.
Ken was an educator and life-long learner, starting as a teacher and ending in the administrative office, retiring from the Decorah School District as superintendent. He earned his PHD from the University of Iowa and always pushed himself to continually learn, never being content with status quo. His educational drive impacted his family and friends who often found their positions politely challenged. Ken made regular efforts to stay in touch with former students and colleagues from all over the country, communicating with them through conversation or email.
Family was Ken’s devotion. He is survived by Barbara “Barb” Jensen, his wife of 40 years; son, Kurt (Carrie) Jensen, of Kenosha, Wis.; daughter, Gina Jensen, of Cupertino, Calif.; daughter, Christal (Tom) Jensen-Barrett, of San Carlos, Calif.; Sara and Ron Fitch of Woodbury, Minn. and Todd and Jodi Rosauer of Woodbury, Minn. He held his eight grandchildren close to his heart. He also is survived by brother, Richard (Dorothy) Jensen, and sister, Leanne (Steve) Berns, of West Union.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Brian Jensen; and his parents, Richard and Vivian “Pede” Jensen.
Ken and Barb spent many winters traveling the U.S. in their RV. As regular visitors of Texas, they ventured into Mexico where they enjoyed the interactions and kindness of locals. While in Kentucky they attended multiple bluegrass music festivals. In Quartzite, Ariz., they hunted for minerals and gold! Their adventures were always full of laughter, memories and plain old fun.
As a long-time member of the Oneota Country Club, he was an avid golfer. Ken could be regularly found pushing to improve his game while competing with his buddies.
Ken’s favorite hobby was his farm. He was a certified tree farmer, having planted over 40 acres of trees on his property; he enjoyed experimenting in his garden with various growing methods, heirlooms, green housing and much more.
Anytime friends or family would come to the farm he thoroughly enjoyed their experience, encouraging exploration on ‘the hill’ or review of his many projects.
There will be a private family event to mark his passing followed by a celebration of life gathering on a date and location to be announced.
Ken will be greatly missed by family and friends.
