Lilah Viola Hughes, 93, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society, Postville Center. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 26, at the Frankville Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Gary Catterson officiating. Karen Holthaus was the pianist. There was a one-hour visitation prior to the service. Burial at the Frankville Cemetery will be at a later date.
Lilah, the daughter of Edgar Albert and Clara Amelia (Wangness) Clement, was born Sept. 28, 1925, at Decorah. She was baptized as an infant at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, and was a 1943 graduate of Decorah High School.
Lilah was united in marriage to Evart James Hughes March 10, 1944, at Washington Prairie Church. The couple spent most of their married life in Northeast Iowa. They spent many years farming in rural Frankville, where they raised their four children: Linda, Ron, Donna and Rick. They were members of Frankville Presbyterian Church where she was an active member of the Presbyterian Women.
Along with being a hardworking farmwife, Lilah also worked many years at Northern Engraving in Wau-kon.
Throughout her life, Lilah loved playing cards with family and friends. Even as she transitioned to life at the Good Samaritan Center, card playing continued to be an important part of her life. She and Evart enjoyed fishing in the Mississippi River.
They also had many adventures with friends such as hunting in Wyoming and a trip to Hawaii. She especially loved spending time with family. Holidays were filled with family, food and fun.
Lilah is survived by her children: Linda Rae (Bruce) Schoening of Georgetown, Texas; Ronald Evart (Linda) Hughes of Luana and Rick Lee (Patti) Hughes of Decorah. She also is survived by her 10 grand-children: Brent (Angela) Schoening, Travis (Dawn) Hughes, Toby (Kim Askeland) Hughes, Kari (Jim) Donovan, Tonia (Eric) Courtney, Clint (Kris) Bodensteiner, Erik (Tammy) Bodensteiner, Tory (Tonya) Hughes, Tappi Hughes, Trista (Darryn ) Ruchty; 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Evart, who died Oct. 5, 2003; her daughter, Donna Kay (Reggie) Gross, who died Jan. 9, 2014; two brothers, Willard and Edward Clement, and a sister, Kathryn Hoyme.
