Lucille Hinker

Lucille Hinker, 99, of Calmar, died Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah. Services were at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 18, at Calmar Lutheran Church, Calmar, with Pastor Phillip Olson officiating. Organist was Lorraine Meyer. Soloist was Bob Martin (“In the Garden”). Hymns were “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” “Just a Closer Walk” and “Children of the Heavenly Father.” Memories were shared by Robert Melin and others. Placement of the pall was by Melody Melin, Brenda Quint, Wendy Vogel and Leann Hinker. Honorary casket bearers were Erin Larson, Laura Quint, Jonathon Long, Shanna Hawkins,Christopher Larson and Benjamin Larson. Casket bearers were Greg Quint, Jason Quint, Doug Vogel, Brett Vogel, Paul Garlinghouse, Erik Hawkins and Spencer Hinker Garlinghouse. Interment was at Calmar Lutheran Cemetery, Calmar. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, Calmar.

Lucille Margaret (Brookner) Hinker was born May 20, 1915, the daughter of Joseph and Louisa (Frey) Brookner in Calmar. Lucille was baptized July 25, 1915, and confirmed May 26, 1929, at the Calmar Lutheran Church. Lucille attended Calmar Public School and graduated in 1934. She was united in marriage to Reuben Hinker June 3, 1934, St. Aloysius Rectory in Calmar. Lucille was a homemaker and lived all of her life in Calmar. She was a lifelong member of the Calmar Lutheran Church, WELCA Women, Ladies Circle and Do Day Quilters. Lucille’s hobbies included flower and vegetable gardening, embroidery, playing cards and volunteer work. She enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining her entire family, especially for Christmas. She also liked to feed the birds and even had a feeder at Aase Haugen. She was Queen of the Calmar Farmer’s Day Parade in 1998 and received the Iowa Volunteerism Award from former Governor Vilsack in 2000.

Lucille is survived by her two children, Marilyn (Tony) Larson, Decorah and Duane (Janet) Hinker, Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren: Melody (Bob) Melin, Byron, Minn.; Terry Larson, Rochester, Minn.; Brenda (Greg) Quint, Clive; Wendy (Doug) Vogel, Cedar Rapids; and Leann Hinker (Paul Garlinghouse), Tiffin; great-grandchildren: Christopher (Alexis) Larson, Benjamin (Ann) Larson and Erin Larson, Jason and Laura Quint, Brett (Ashley) Vogel, Jonathon Long, Shanna (Erik) Hawkins and Spencer Hinker Garlinghouse; great-great-grandchildren: Zoe, Lola, Stella, and Ally Hawkins, Noah Long, Cody Larson, Ayden Smith, Ethan Bash, Kayden and Jordan Vogel. One sister-in-law: Peggy Hinker, Burbank, Calif.   

Lucille was preceded in death by parents, Joseph and Louisa (Frey) Brookner; her husband, Reuben Hinker, in 1988; two brothers, Truman Brookner and Carl Brookner; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Rose (Houdek) Hinker; one sister-in-law, Irma (Burton) Bergsrud; four brothers-in-law: Daniel (Ruth) Hinker, Felix (Ruth) Hinker, Carl (Marge) Hinker, Florian Hinker; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials may be given in memory of Lucille to the Aase Haugen Senior Services, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, IA, 52101 or to the Calmar Lutheran Church, 200 East Street, Calmar, IA, 52132 or as you choose.
