Mae Brynsaas, 100, of Decorah, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, at the Barthell O.E.S Home, in Decorah. Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 16, at the Canoe Ridge Canoe Lutheran Church, 1316 Canoe Ridge Road, Decorah, with Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Friends called from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and also after 10 a.m. at the church Monday morning. Suzy Kimber, Luann Ward, Lisa Lundtvedt and Susan Boucher placed the pall. Casket bearers were Mark Spilde, Jeff Brynsaas, Steve Spilde, Russ Kimber, Dwayne Lundvedt, Dan Spilde, Tom Ward and Rodney Ihde.
Mae Lenora (Rasmussen) Brynsaas was born Dec. 5, 1916, to Jens and Stella (Rosendahl) Rasmussen in Decorah. She was baptized Jan. 1, 1917, and confirmed April 19, 1931, at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. Mae grew up and attended rural country school in Winneshiek County. She graduated from Decorah High School in May of 1934. Mae worked as a waitress at the Springer Hotel for several years after graduation. She married Norman Brynsaas Aug. 18, 1937, at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. They lived on farms in Winneshiek County until moving to Decorah in 1953. Mae worked at the Decorah Creamery, A.S.C.S office and the extension office until retiring June 1, 1979. After retiring, she volunteered at the hospital and the museum. She was a lifetime member of the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. Mae enjoyed volunteering, socializing and babysitting her grandchildren.
Mae is survived by her two children, Nancy (Bill) Spilde; Decorah and Robert (Elaine) Brynsaas, Apache Junction, Ariz.; grandchildren: Luann (Tom) Ward, Calmar; Mark (Teresa) Spilde, Decorah; Steve (Julie) Spilde, Decorah; Dan (Samantha) Spilde, Daytona, Fla.; Lisa (Dwayne) Lundvedt, Decorah; Suzanne (Russ) Kimber, Owasso, Okla.; Jeffrey (Becky) Brynsaas, Tempe, Ariz.; Susan Boucher, Mesa, Ariz. and Rodney (Jodi) Ihde, Luana; 30 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, March 11, 2007; her parents, Jens and Stella (Rosendahl) Rasmussen; grandson, Andy, in 1985; brothers and sisters: Henrietta (Casper) Sundby, Lester (Margerite) Rasmussen, Ray (Grace) Rasmussen, Vernon (Lyla) Rasmussen, Selma (Russel) Nelson, Ernin (Arlene) Rasmussen and Marlyn Rasmussen; father and mother-in-law, Hans and Karen Brynsaas; brothers and sisters-in-law: Nina (Duward) Borseth, Pearl (Gilbert) Rosendahl, Emma (Ned) Brown, Art (Alma) Brynsaas, Henry (Mildred) Brynsaas, Edwin (Leona) Brynsaas.
