Marcella Soukup

Marcella Soukup, 86, of Calmar, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Organist was Jeanette Dietzenbach. Soloist was Dan Silhacek. Music also was provided by the St. Wenceslaus Choir. Hymns were “Here I am, Lord,” “Ava Maria,” “Let there Be Peace on Earth,” “Goin’ Home” and “How Great Thou Art.” Lector was Shelby White. Eucharistic ministers were Betty Soukup and Pat Wiest. Offertory gift bearers were Heather Barbee, Shelby White, Heidi Beals, Melody Ollendieck and Melissa Elsbernd. Casket bearers were Marcella’s great-grandsons: Keegan Pope, John Pope, Kyler Barbee, Curran Barbee, Tyler White, Casey Ollendieck, Oliver Soukup and Harrison Elsbernd. Interment was at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery, Spillville. Arrangements were handled by Schluter Balik Funeral Home.

Marcella Wilheminia (Phillips) Soukup was born May 28, 1932, to Jerome and Julia (Frana) Phillips. She attended St. Wenceslaus School and two years of high school in Spillville before graduating from Calmar High School. Marcella married Marvin Soukup Oct. 24, 1949, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. Marcella worked at Nor-Eg in Calmar and Camcar in Decorah. She was a lifetime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church where she was a member of the Ladies Guild and officer in the Home School Association. She enjoyed traveling on bus tours, working in her flower gardens, quilting and playing cards. Marcella especially enjoyed cooking and baking for her family.

Marcella’s survivors include three daughters Connie Arens, Cedar Rapids; Joni Kubesh, Peosta; and Janice (Russ) Turner, Oelwein; three sons: Marvin Jr. (Mary) Soukup, Calmar; Dale (Deb) Soukup, Marion; and Douglas (Betty) Soukup, Calmar; grandchildren: Scott (Angie) Pope, Penny (Greg) Mara, Heather (Tom) Barbee, Shelby (Brian) White, Heidi (Josh) Beals, Adam (Rachel) Hesse, Ben (Beth) Hesse, Ryan Soukup, Melody (Kirk) Ollendieck, Jenny (Jared) Zeutenhorst, Amy Soukup, Ashley Soukup, Melissa (Reid) Elsbernd, Michael Soukup, Kyle (Dayna) Soukup, Zach (Erica) Soukup; and 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews; and ne sister-in-law, Lois Phillips, Calmar.

Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; son-in-law, John Kubesh; parents, Jerome and Julia (Frana) Phillips; father and mother-in-law, Carl and Regina (Woldan) Soukup; brother, Bernard Phillips; brother-in-law, James Soukup; sister-in-law, Mary Soukup.
