Marie Balik

Marie Balik, 100, of Spillville, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Organist was Jeanette Dietzenbach. Special music was provided by Katie Steege and Bree Sauer; cantor was Dan Silhacek. The Spillville Choir also sang. Hymns were “Here I am, Lord,” “Be Not Afraid,” “On Eagles Wings” and “Goin’ Home.” Lectors were Lana Ott and Bob Smith. Eucharistic ministers were Pat Wiest, Sharon Kleve and Judy Adams. Offertory gift bearers were Marie’s granddaughters. Casket bearers were all of Marie’s grandchildren. Interment was at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville. Arrangements were handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Marie Louise Balik was born May 1, 1917, the daughter of Edward and Nan (Glass) Budke in Fort Atkinson. She attended St. Johns Catholic School and Fort Atkinson High School. Marie married Stanley A. Balik June 28, 1939, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. Together they had four children: Jim, Bill, Ann and Betty. Stanley and Marie owned and operated Balik Implement in Spillville. Stanley passed away in 1962. Marie also worked at her parents’ Budke Drug Store in Fort Atkinson. Marie was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed sports, especially basketball and baseball, the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, crocheting, bingo and happy hour.

Marie is survived by her four children: Jim Balik, Spillville; Bill (Janell) Balik, Burnsville, Minn.; Ann (Bob) Smith, Bloomington, Minn. and Betty (John) Sender, Cold Spring, Minn.; grandchildren: Brian (Heather Lang) Smith, Chris (Kristin) Smith, Michelle Uccello, Jen (Brian) Anderson, Aaron (Angie) Sender, Andi (Brett) Riley, Amanda (Antony) Werstler, Jeff (Sarah) Balik and Kevin Balik; along with 16 great-grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, June 23, 1962; parents, Edward and Nan (Glass) Budke; brothers and sisters-in-law: Margaret, Marcella, Mildred, Robert (Helen) Balik, Irma (George) Ebert, Viola (Leo) Carney and Delores (Clarence) Brom.
