Marilyn Claudette Meyer, 84, of Castalia, died Monday, July 25, 2022, at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Marilyn was born April 24, 1938 to Beulah Bray in Postville. She graduated from Postville High School in 1956. Marilyn was united in marriage with Roy Ellis in 1957. Three children were born to this union. They later divorced. Marilyn was united in marriage to Roland Meyer in 1967. One child was born to this union. They later divorced.

In her earlier years, Marilyn worked as a nanny and other jobs, including Douglass Pharmacy, Postville; Peterson Tractor Sales & Service, Decorah and Livingood’s Supper Club, Frankville. She will be best remembered for her years in the Postal Service, first at Castalia and then Postville, where she retired from after a 26-year career. Always a hard worker and never liking to be idle, she then worked several years at Walmart in Decorah. Marilyn, known as Granny to most she knew, centered her life around her family. She loved going to visit family and friends often, and also really enjoyed listening to country music, her garden and flowers, fishing trips and bowling.

Surviving Marilyn are her children, Deborah Schmitt of Castalia and Scott Ellis (Angela Bates) of Monona, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; daughters-in-law, Angie Ellis of Spillville, and Trixie Leuchtenmacher of Cresco; her siblings, Beverly Johnson of Waukon, Iowa and Janice Dougherty of Waukon; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Starkey and Abby Hoak, Waukon, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews along with many wonderful neighbors and dear friends. Preceding Marilyn in death were her children, Sally Meyer and Donald Ellis; mother and step-father Beulah and Norman Starkey; siblings, Jerry Starkey, Ricke Starkey, Lynn Starkey and Bradley Starkey; son-in-law, Floyd Schmitt; brothers-in-law, Dale Johnson and Ralph Dougherty; her sisters-in-law, Dixie Starkey and Kimberly Starkey; and her nephews, Pat Dougherty and Terry Johnson.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, with Daryl Schultz as the officiant.Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Castalia. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Postville is assisting the family with arrangements.
