Marlys Elaine Cook, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, at UnityPoint Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
She was born Nov. 18, 1933, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph C. and Valeda A. (Squires) Auner. She graduated from Janesville Consolidated High School, where she was a first team All-State basketball player, attended UNI for two years, and graduated from Des Moines Community College. On Oct. 25, 1952, she was united in marriage to Cecil I. Cook Jr. in Janesville. He preceded her in death on July 29, 2011. She was employed as a nursing home administrator in the area, including 16 years at Winneshiek County Care Center. She was also a member of the O.E.S.
Marlys is survived by foster daughter, Deanna (Tom) Sullivan of Bloomington, IL; daughter-in-law, Susan Cook of Cedar Falls; son, Bradley Cook of Cedar Falls; daughter, Gena (Robert) Bappe of Harford, SD; grandchildren, Alex (Nate) Oakland, Brooke (Beau) Fitts, Elizabeth (Tyler) Ford, Blake (Sarah) Bappe, Jeremiah (Cassie) Cook, Jennifer (Richard) Schlotfeldt, Daniel (Lindsay) Sullivan, and Laura (Tom) Feely; 26 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil; son, Brian Cook; and brother, Raymond Auner.
Services are at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at the Janesville United Methodist Church, with a luncheon following. Burial in the Washington Chapel Church Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday. An Eastern Star service will be 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Richardson Funeral Service in Cedar Falls with visitation to follow until 7:30 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date.

Was sorry to hear about Marlys’s passing. She was very good about keeping me up to date. with what was foing on in her life. Sorry that I will not be able to make the service as I am also dealing with some health issues. My synpathy to the family. Janice
