Marlys Hoines, 101, of Cresco, passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
Marlys Juliet Hoines was born May 7, 1917, to Ole and Inga (Fulsaas) Melaas in Ridgeway. She was baptized and confirmed at Madison Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway. She attended country school through eighth grade, graduated from Ridgeway High School, and continued her education until graduating from Normal Training School in Cresco. She returned to the Ridgeway area to teach rural school for five years.
She married Elder G. Hoines June 29, 1940, moved to Cresco and purchased the William Milz Drug Store. Marlys managed the drug store while Elder pursued his degree in pharmacy at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Elder and Marlys owned and operated the Hoines Drug Store for 41 years.
Marlys’ interests were family, cooking, traveling, golf and entertainment involving friends and neighbors. Christmas time was a very special time for her with the gathering of family and friends.
Marlys is survived by daughter Sonja and Dan Lively, Geoff and Punam Lively and Emilia Lively; son John and Cindy Hoines, Kristen and Geoff Clark, Faith, Ben and Grace Clark, Paul Hoines and Becca Mauch.
Marlys was preceded in death by her husband Elder; her parents; sister Ila; and brother-on-law John Morton.
