Meghan Elizabeth Powers, 34, of Wilton, passed away at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. A gathering was held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 at the Grace United Church of Christ, Wilton. A memorial service was held at 10:30, immediately following the gathering. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the benefit of her children. Condolences may be left at bentleyfuneralhome.com.
Meghan was born Oct. 20, 1985, the daughter of Richard and Bess (Stewart) Powers in Pella. Meghan attended North Fayette High School in West Union, graduating with the Class of 2004. She later attended Cornell College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and later earned her master’s degree in higher education from Upper Iowa University. She was currently completing her doctorate in higher education from Western Illinois University. She married Patrick Slessor Dec. 31, 2010, in Decorah.
Meghan worked as a journalist, writing articles for several newspapers. Meghan also served as a direct support professional for adults with developmental disabilities. Most recently, Meghan was raising her children while pursuing her doctorate. Meghan was a member of Grace United Church of Christ and Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society. Meghan was artistic and treasured any opportunity to plan an event. She loved to travel and be involved in the lives of her family and friends. Above all, Meghan cherished being a mother.
Meghan will be missed by her husband, Pastor Patrick Slessor; two sons, Roderick and Lachlan; her mother, Bess Powers of Wapello; and two brothers, Patrick Powers and Kelly Powers both of Wapello.
Meghan was preceded in death by her father, Richard.
