Mikel’s greatest joy was being a Mom to her beautiful daughters, Miloh and Maisie. She lived for them and will live on through them as a gift to us all. Mikel’s family, including her parents Mike and Shelly Sexton, siblings; Jade Sexton, Ryan (Danielle) Sexton, Chad Sexton and Travis Sexton, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and an endless list of friends will struggle each day to fill the emptiness left by her passing.
Mikel was greeted with open arms by her grandparents who went before her, Frances Daniels, William and Marian Sexton and her aunt, Kaye Laitinen.
Mikel was born March 5, 1991 in Rochester, Minn. The family moved to Harmony, Minn., before she turned one. In her elementary school years she was a member of the Chess Club, Girl Scouts and trained in Tae Kwon Do (reaching a high level red belt). As a teenager Mikel was ready to get out in the working world. By the age of 13 she was working at the Harmony House and the Nursing Home. She later became a CNA and worked throughout high school. Mikel graduated from Fillmore Central in 2009. She continued her education at RCTC and Mayo for Dialysis Tech and worked there for a time. Her working career included time in the HR department at the Spring Valley Nursing Home and The Food Coop in Rochester. She also worked at Laddy’s in Chester and most recently at Stellar as a server and bartender. Making so many lifelong friends that she considered family. Her path in life led her to many different occupations, all with the common thread of being surrounded by people. Her favorite of which was photography and having her own business. She was an amazing self-taught photographer. Mikel also shared a love for animals including: dogs, cats, chickens and ducks.
Part of her life was spent living in Chester with Matthew Haugland raising their daughters and spending time with family. They were married in 2019 and later separated. She always had continued support from this second family which included: Leroy Haugland, Michaela (Adam) Gist, Danielle Lemus, Gabrielle Lemus and many more aunts, uncles and cousins.
She absolutely loved spending time with family and made every occasion special. Her solid sense of true self, love and loyalty attracted friends from all walks of life – true, real friends that always have your back. They’re a wonderful blessing to leave her girls. They will forever be loved.
Her life was hard, she struggled daily but she got up, showed up, put a smile on and made life better for others.
Mikel chose to be a donor and was able to give this gift as well.
Blessed are all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life is planned, as there is no other way more fitting for this amazing soul. Please plan to join her family on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Old Legion Hall (35 1st Ave NW Harmony, MN). Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
