Norma Lucille (Sunday) Costa was born Oct. 16, 1923, the daughter of Emil and Helma (Bergland) Sunday, on a farm in Springfield Township, rural Decorah. She attended Knutson Country School and graduated from Decorah High School in 1942. Norma worked as a bookkeeper at the old Coast to Coast store in Decorah.
Norma married Everett L. Costa Oct. 16, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Calmar, and resided in Decorah. In the mid-1960s, Everett and Norma moved to Spencer for a couple of years and then moved to Modesto, Calid. While living in California, Norma worked at Montgomery Ward’s for many years.
Norma moved back to Decorah in 2002, and purchased the house she and Everett built in the 1950s. It is located next to her sister, Elaine. She has enjoyed living there, watching and feeding the birds. Over the years, Norma has enjoyed many family gatherings – especially the card playing.
Norma was an avid sports fan – baseball, football, basketball and NASCAR. She spent endless hours watching sports on TV. The Chicago Cubs, Oakland Raiders and Iowa Hawkeyes could always count on her support. Sometimes even the Iowa State Cyclones.
Norma is survived by one sister-in-law, Betty Sunday of Waukegan, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett (1985); her brothers: Lester (Mayme) Sunday, Earl Sunday, Walter (Donna) Sunday, and Harold (Mary) Sunday; her sister, Elaine (Pete) Lowry; and one nephew, Rod Sunday.
