Remington D. Whalen, four month-old son of Christa Hammel and Paul Whalen of Decorah, was welcomed into the arms of the Lord and his heavenly family Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016. Funeral services are Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial is at St. Mary’s Hanover Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there is a 4 p.m. scripture service. Honorary casket bearers are Remington’s aunts, uncles and cousins. Remington David Whalen was born March 14, 2016, in Decorah, and was baptized June 14, at St. Mary’s Hanover Catholic Church in rural Waukon. He was a precious little boy with the most beautiful eyes who was always smiling. Remington loved people, especially his siblings and liked watching them play. He also liked being outside, going for lawn mower rides, and watching the leaves blow and rustle. Recently, Remington discovered he loved the taste of watermelon and sweet corn. He was a happy baby and was always very content amid a busy household.

Surviving family include his parents, Christa Hammel and Paul Whalen and siblings Sophia, Max, Brycen and Brynlee of Decorah; grandparents: David and Karla Hammel of Dorchester and David and Shirley Whalen of Harmony, Minn.; great-grandfather Ralph Hammel, Sr.; six aunts: Bethany (Eric) Dunbar, Leanna (Bryce) Hendrick, Shelby (Matt) Preston, Jodi (Neal) Schilling, Julie (Blaine) Christopher and Anita (Jason) Young; an uncle Dylan (Myriah Groth) Hammel; and cousins: Ava Green, Jack Dunbar, Hayden, Kade and baby Hendrick; Eleanora and baby Preston; and Brooke, Blair and Blake Schilling.

He was preceded by great-grandparents: Emmett and Betty Howe, Stella Hammel, Paul and Zola Whalen, and Ven and Agnes Beckman; two great-uncles, Kevin Howe and Steven Hammel; and a great-aunt Paulette Henry.
