Rene Michael Haindfield, 54, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, after a courageous battle with GBM brain cancer. A memorial service was Thursday, Aug. 20, at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes Sioux City.

He was born March 8, 1961, and grew up in Sloan. He graduated from Westwood Community School, Sloan, in 1979 and graduated from SE Community College in Burlington with a degree in gunsmithing. Rene excelled in a variety of skilled occupations with different companies including but not limited to Briar and Bow Gunsmithing, Tyson/IBP Quality Assurance (20 years), Mars Petcare as an auditor, and Northern Plains Grain and Milling as a plant manager. Rene was an active member of the Elks Club for many years and served a term as an Exalted Ruler. Along with loving his family and friends, Rene lived life to its fullest with woodworking, hunting, fishing, trapping and searching for elusive morel mushrooms being his favorite hobbies. He was a longtime hunter safety instructor, who recognized how important it is for youth to hunt and do so safely. Taking the bull by the horns took on new meaning when Rene successfully shot a record book bull moose on a self-guided Alaska hunt in 2010. He wasn’t one to sit still — always tinkering, inventing and planning the next adventure.

Rene is survived by his wife, Sherry; mother Darlene Lueck, sister Carolyn (Darold) Clausen, brothers Mark (Julie) Haindfield, Marlin Haindfield, Bart Haindfield, and Terry (Kristi) Haindfield; sons, Shane (Teresa) Haindfield, Adam (Kellie) Haindfield, and Preston Haindfield; daughter Tracy Wolfsen; step-daughters Lindsey (Gary) Schulz and Sam Anderson; step-son Matt Anderson; and seven grandchildren.

Rene was preceded in death by his father, Darl Haindfield and step-father, Kenny Lueck.
