René Viera Calderon

René Viera Calderon, 57, of Decorah, was born the son of Antonio Jose and Toribio (Calderon) Vieras Dec. 6, 1962, in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. In 1979, Rene moved to Wisconsin. René received his GED and an associate’s degree in psychology.

In 1986, Rene married Susan Hyde. The couple had one child. They later divorced. Rene moved to Texas in 1985. René was united in marriage with Sandy Miller in Houston, Texas, Dec. 28, 2007. After their marriage, the couple moved to Missouri for three years, and in 2012, they moved to Decorah. Rene worked as an independent contractor.

Rene was a member of the Odd Fellows of Decorah. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. René loved to barbeque and loved spending time with his family.
René died Thursday, June 25, 2020, at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 2, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, 319-278-4245, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family. René is survived by his wife of 12 years, Sandy; four sons: Eric (Elenita) Rosario and José (Vanessa) Viera, both of Florida, Eddie (Lindsey) Witherspoon of Texas and Lee (Kassy) Hovenga of Iowa; four daughters: Myriah (Leslie) Parker of Texas, Candace Hovenga of Iowa, Jessica (Bryan) Stout of Iowa and Rae (Josh) Hovenga of Iowa; 26 grandchildren; his mother, Toribio Viera, of Waupun, Wis.; three brothers: Freddy Viera, José Viera and Norgie Viera, all of Waupun; three sisters: Maria Nelly (José) Guimarais and Ruth Viera, both of Waupun, and Milagro Ayala of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews. Rene also leaves behind his beloved companions Casper, Blake and Marley, who were dear to his heart and spoiled with goody-goodies and daily car rides.

Rene was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Antonio Vieras; and one sister, Amarylis Viera.
