Rose Blong

Rose Blong, 97, of St. Lucas, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice facility in Hiawatha. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, with Rev. Kyle Digmann officiating. Organist was Kathy Meyer. St. Luke’s Choir sang “Here I am, Lord,” “Softly and Tenderly,” “Peace is Flowing like a River” and “How Great Thou Art.” Lector was Mike Schmeltzer. Eucharistic ministers were Darlene Schwamman, Barb Reicks, Rosemary Kriener and Karen Kiss. Offertory gift bearers were Karen Kiss and Donna Burke. Casket bearers were Ronald Blong, David Blong, Jon Kiss, Tom Kiss, Craig Burke, Joshua Burke and Leon Blong. Interment was at St. Luke’s Catholic Cemetery, St. Lucas. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Rose Theresa Blong was born Aug. 28, 1919, to Clement and Elizabeth (Leibold) Blong on the family farm near St. Lucas. Rose helped on the family farm while growing up. She later moved to Cedar Rapids where she worked as a housekeeper at St. Luke’s Hospital for 40 years. Rose enjoyed crocheting, traveling, fishing, and later in life, participating in activities at the nursing home.

Rose is survived by her two siblings, Viola Schmelzer, Appleton, Wis.; and Irvin (Marie) Blong, Fort Atkinson; along with several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Clement and Elizabeth (Leibold) Blong; one sister, Florence (Dr. Daniel) Poirier; one brother, Clement Blong; one brother-in-law, Joe Schmelzer.
