Rose Mary Lien, age 89, formerly of Decorah, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, at Brookdale Senior Living in Winona, Minn., at the age of 89.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2021, at Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Peter Kowitz officiating. She will be laid to rest at Freeport Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., one hour before the service, at Decorah Lutheran Church.

Rose Mary Violet (Rawson) Lien was born May 14, 1932, in Cheyenne, Wyo., the daughter of Clark Robert Rawson and Ida Bertine Lansrud. Rose Mary and her family lived in the Sioux City, IA area before moving to the Burbank/Pasadena California area. Rose Mary attended school in Iowa, California and spent one year at Seattle University in Washington State on a scholarship. After that first year there she went home to Iowa to see family.  It was in Iowa at a picnic that she met and fell in love with her first husband, Arlan Stevens. Rose Mary moved back to Iowa and was blessed with her only child, Diane. Rose Mary and Arlan later divorced.

Rose Mary later met the love of her life, Allen Lien, at Millie’s and married on March 13, 1965. Rose Mary and Allen made their home in Decorah and raised Diane there. Rose Mary and Allen enjoyed dancing, fishing, camping, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.

Later in life Granny’s most cherished memories were spent with Diane, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Rose Mary was a hard worker and had many different career paths throughout her life. Rose Mary was a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell, an activities aide in Decorah, and certified med aide at several care centers in Iowa and Arizona. Rose Mary died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, at Brookdale Senior Living in Winona, at the age of 89.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Diane Thompson, Clarion, IA; her grandson Justin Thompson, and great grandchildren, Kinsley and Kanyon Thompson, Sergeant Bluff, IA and granddaughter, Jessica (Randall) Sullivan, and great grandchildren, Bryan, Rawson, and David Sullivan, Rollingstone, MN; her special niece Carrol (Fred) Reisenauer, Cota De Coza, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Allen in 1992; son-in-law, David Thompson in 2010; brothers, Charles Bartholomew and LeRoy Rawson.
