Steven Michael Gelo, 44, of Waukon, died, after a long illness, on Sunday, June 26, 2022, at his home in rural Waukon.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 30 at 11 a.m. at Martin – Grau Funeral Home in Waukon, with Tom Hollmann officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.
Steven Michael Gelo was born April 27, 1978, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Gary and Gloria (Heins) Gelo. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1996. Steve had a love for football which began when he played in school. Steve lived in Mason City, and then moved to Cedar Rapids, in 2000, where he worked at Chamberlin Landscaping and then Outdoor Creations as a landscaping foreman. He supervised a crew doing landscaping installation, retaining walls, patios, lighting, water features, lawn care, and snow removal in the wintertime. In 2015, Steve moved back to Waukon to work on the family farm in Jefferson township where they raised cattle and crops. He also helped with repairs to the farm machinery, to the farm buildings, and fencing.
Steve loved spending time with his best friend, his son, Seth who he loved unconditionally. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and helping others. Steve also enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, cutting wood, woodworking, playing cards and darts, drawing, kayaking, four-wheeling, listening to music, attending concerts, and grilling. Steve loved telling jokes and setting around a good campfire. He was an avid Detroit Lions fan and his favorite player was Matthew Stafford.
Survivors include his son Seth of Cedar Rapids; his parents Gary and Gloria Gelo of Waukon; his siblings: Jeff Gelo, Jean Gelo both of Waukon, Lisa (Curt) Pakkebier of Cedar Rapids, and Dave (Kirstin) Gelo of Prairie du Chien, WI; his nieces and nephews: Reid and Cade Pakkebier, Tristin and Aspen Gelo, Heather Jones, Nick Winter, and Ashley Ryan. He is preceded in death by a sister Becky Jo Gelo who died in 2020; his grandparents: Arthur and Eunice Gelo and Austin and Eunice Newcomb.
