On Saturday, September 9th, 2023, Verna Sand passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was 96 years old.
A lifelong native of northeast Iowa, she was well-loved by all who knew her selfless embrace and love of others. Verna always put you first, never expecting or asking anything in return. She was willing to be with you in silliness or sorrow. She made time for everyone, no matter her situation; always the consummate host for extended family get-togethers and short notice cinnamon rolls and coffee.
Verna Kathleen Amdahl was born October, 28, 1926, the daughter of John and Mae Amdahl who farmed near Ossian, Iowa. She married Robert J. Sand, also from a farming family near Ossian, in 1948. They settled in Decorah, Iowa, where they raised a family and remained there for the rest of their lives.
Verna was educated at Luther College and taught 2nd and 3rd graders in McGregor, Iowa. She loved teaching and continued doing so with her own children. From her they learned to be grateful and gracefully accept what was given. Like her father and mother before her, she found refuge in Christ and followed his teaching.
She became an integral part of her grandchildren’s lives, who treasure the love she gave them. Seven great grandchildren will learn of her influence on their parent’s lives and in this way, her memory lives on.
As for the world and its ever present danger and troubles, she would only say, “Sometimes the best we can do is love our neighbor.”
And when we said, “I love you, Mom”, she would always say, “I love you more” and that was always the truth.
She is survived by their five children: Alan (Cara), Kevin (Leslie), Daniel (Carole), Robyn Sand Anderson (Jon), and Douglas (Ronda). Her husband Robert passed away in 2005.
Memorials may be directed to the Aase Haugen Home or First Lutheran Church, Decorah, IA.
A private family graveside service is planned at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. A celebration of Verna’s life will be held at a later date. Lindstrom Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
