Virgil Monroe

Virgil Monroe, 87, of Ossian, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian. Visitation was Friday, April 3, from 4-7 p.m., at the Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Ossian and one hour before services at the church Saturday. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, with Rev. Ginny Olson as the officiant. Burial with military honors followed at First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ossian. Condolences may be left at graufuneralhomes.com. Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Ossian, is helping the family with the arrangements.

Virgil Dean, the son of Albert Clark and Mari Amelia (Land) Monroe, was born Nov. 4, 1927, in Castalia. He was baptized at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Castalia and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia.Virgil attended Castalia Public School through the eighth grade and later earned his G.E.D. as an adult. He served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman during the Korean War. Virgil was united in marriage with Lois Peterson Sept. 2, 1951. The couple farmed in Dover Township, Fayette County, for over 40years. Virgil also worked at the sale barns in West Union and Waukon for several years. After Lois passed away in 1992, Virgil moved to Fennimore, Wis. in 1994. He returned to Ossian in 2000 and entered the Ossian Senior Hospice. Virgil was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian and transferred to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Eldorado, after First Lutheran closed. He also was a member of the Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post No. 503 in Ossian.

Virgil is survived by his children: Julienne (Randy) Smith of Grinnell; Leo (Cheryle) Monroe of Ossian; LeVirgil (Marie) Monroe of West Union; Leland (Lynn) Monroe of Ossian; Layne (Diane) Monroe of Ankeny; and Jeff (Angie) Monroe of Fennimore, Wis.; 15 grandchildren: Tyler, Travis and Troy Smith; Caleb, Tommy, Lincoln and Ben Monroe; Tiffany Sheldon, Stacey Batterson, Kim Vorwald, Courtney Salmon and Bayley, Madelyn, Morgan and Madison Monroe; eight great-grandchildren: Greg, Dayna and Drew Sheldon; Kadee, Carlee and Beau Batterson; and Karver and Kegan Vorwald; two brothers, Forest (JoAnn) Monroe of Guttenberg; and Fieldon “Fritz” (Harriet) Monroe of Fredericksburg; one sister, Rose Keller of Phoenix, Ariz.; and four sisters-in-law: Marie Monroe, Shirley Monroe and Judy Ehler, all of Ossian; and Audrey (Andy) Vagts of West Union.

Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, who died July 9, 1992; his daughter, Nancy, who died in infancy; his parents, A.C. and Mari Monroe; his father and mother-in-law, Leo and Julia Peterson; four brothers: Alvin, Bernold, Curtis and Carroll Monroe; two sisters, Benita Heins and Marlene Schissel; and brothers- and sisters-in-law: Stanley and Margie Borseth, Jerry Ehler, Glen Heins, Margie Monroe and Delores Monroe.
