Wilbert Schmitt

Wilbert Schmitt, 89, of Ft. Atkinson, died Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse. Wis. Private family burial is at 10:30 am. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the St. John’s Cemetery in Ft. Atkinson.

Wilbert Chris Schmitt was born Jan. 9, 1928, to Benjamin and Ida (Hageman) Schmitt on the family farm near Fort Atkinson. He attended St. John’s Catholic School in Fort Atkinson. Wilbert farmed near Fort Atkinson. After retiring he moved to Spillville to the senior housing where he took his daily walk to the Mini Mart for coffee and socializing. The last couple of years he was living at the Evans Nursing Home in Cresco. Wilbert enjoyed farming, going to Thrashing Days, Mollie Busta Polkas and attending family activities.

Wilbert is survived by two sisters, Serena Timp, Ossian and Darlene Breuss, West Union; three brothers: LaVern (Janice) Schmitt, Lime Springs, Donald (Gloria) Schmitt, Fort Atkinson and Lawrence (Dorothy) Schmitt, Riceville; sister-in-law, Pearl Schmitt, Decorah; and many nieces and nephews.

Wilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Ida (Hageman) Schmitt; brother, Fidelis Schmitt; brothers-in-law, Adrian Timp and DeWayne Breuss; and two nephews, Randy and Darian Breuss.
