A letter to the taxpayers of Winneshiek County

Dear Editor,
After much deliberation, I felt the need to make a recent purchase by the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors known to the public. Mid-January, three implement dealers (myself included) were asked to submit quotes for a new 115hp mowing tractor. This tractor would be a simple two-wheel drive, cabbed tractor, with its main use that of mowing ditches.
The quotes were due February 1, discussed February 8 and voted for February 15. I was notified I was the lowest quoted tractor by a difference of over $12,000, but I did not receive the winning quote. The Board, with the exception of Mark Vick and Dan Langreck, voted to purchase the highest quoted tractor, again for reference, at a cost of $12,000 more than my quote. Comparing the tractor in my quote to the tractor that was chosen, the specs are nearly identical.
Personally, I do not pay taxes in Winneshiek County, but as a partner in a dealership with an owner that does, it is disheartening to know that these types of senseless decisions are being made on behalf of your tax dollars. Not only was it disappointing to lose a tractor sale in which I had the most competitive bid, but to think of the possibilities that the county could use that extra money for is discouraging. The highways, secondary roads, bridges, etc, I know could use $12,000 worth of care. I am confident you could think of ways to spend $12,000 in the county as well. In addition to the board of supervisors, the county engineer and the roadside manager believe this is the best use of your tax dollars.
I attended the meeting following this vote to find clarification on this decision, but unfortunately was met with reasons of preference, historical comfort and ways of tradition.
I hope this will question the way you vote for who is responsible for making decisions on how to spend your tax dollars come election time.
