Chief speaks in support of Marsy’s Law for Iowa

By Dave Smutzler, Decorah

I recently had the opportunity to join Marsy’s Law for Iowa for a Facebook live event discussing victims’ rights in Iowa and the need for the state to put these rights in our constitution. Our discussion primarily focused on the right to safety, which would protect Iowa crime victims from intimidation, harassment and abuse, provide them reasonable protection from the accused and allow a judge to consider the safety of the victim or victim’s family in setting conditions of release or transfer.
As the Decorah Police Chief, I have seen firsthand how victims feel like there are more rights for the criminal than there are for the victim, which is why I am supportive of Marsy’s Law for Iowa.
Marsy’s Law for Iowa would put crime victims’ rights in Iowa’s constitution, right alongside the rights of the accused. These rights include those I mention above, as well as the right to be notified and present at trial and the right to notification of the status of the offender and others.
When victims enter the criminal justice system, they often feel like victims again. As law enforcement officers, we can’t help them, we can’t protect them and we can’t make them feel safe. It’s like a double victimization.
Marsy’s Law for Iowa will empower victims of crime. It will hold us accountable in law enforcement and it’s the right thing to do.
