Climate change is upon us

By Leslie Sand, Decorah

Dear Editor:

Recently, on June 25, a letter to the editor listed the ways in which Spencer, Iowa, residents had their lives upended with the recent extreme rain and subsequent flooding. No city services, businesses closed, no gas or electricity, no air conditioning, basement walls collapsed. The following week, an article ran quoting Winneshiek County Emergency Management Coordinator Sean Snyder saying that the “it will never happen here mentality needs to stop.” Kudos to him and to the newspaper! Freeport residents know this all too well.

Mr. Snyder also pointed out that Iowa ranks fourth in the nation for the most disasters. Iowa was highlighted in the New York Times on May 13 in an article about rising costs for homeowners insurance. These extreme weather events, such as the 4 inches of rain falling in one hour in Lansing last month that caused a propane tank to explode and destroy at least one home, are becoming regular occurrences. Our weather patterns have changed. Climate change is upon us.

There are solutions. Some are unproven and not cost effective. Others are being implemented via the Inflation Reduction Act, or IRA. More is needed. You can learn more at the All Electric Everything table at upcoming Saturday farmers markets in Decorah. This is sponsored by the Winneshiek Energy District and the Northeast Iowa chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. CCL is a non-partisan nonprofit, made up of citizen volunteers who respectfully ask our legislators to implement effective solutions. Iowa boasts over 1,750 supporters. Be one.

Sincerely,
