Reader calls for more ‘we,’ not ‘me’ ahead of polls

By Sue Otte, Decorah

During presidential election years we are often asked, “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?” Is that really the question we should ponder as responsible citizens, I wonder.

I grew up in the time when President John Kennedy was asking youth to consider what they could do for their country, instead of waiting to see what the country could do for them. What an inspiring time that was.

Imagine now, if we asked how others were doing as we decided how to vote in November. Imagine if we were concerned about those without a job, those homeless, those in nursing homes with no family to care for them, those in abusive relationships looking for a way out, those battling drug addiction, and so many others with problems of their own.

Isn’t it time to start caring for each other again? Isn’t it time to remember that rights come with responsibilities? Isn’t it time to leave our obsession with “me” and celebrate the “we” in our nation?

May that question guide your vote in November!
