Reader says ‘it takes a village’ to maintain excellent education

By Margaret Betteridge, Retired Decorah High School teacher, Decorah

Dear Editor,

Thank you to Seth Boyes, new editor of the Decorah Leader, for returning the opinion page and including letters to the editor. It is wonderful to have an opportunity for honest, civilized discourse in our local newspaper again.

I encourage residents of the Decorah school district to vote yes in the special school election on Sept. 10. Early absentee voting has already begun at the courthouse. This vote will help secure necessary funding for a new elementary school.

Decorah has a proud tradition of maintaining high standards and excellence in education. The staff, faculty and programming are well respected in our community and throughout the state. Beyond good teachers and programs, we need to invest in buildings that are most conducive to learning. About 30 years ago, voters approved a bond referendum to improve our high school. We were able to add a state of the art auditorium that students and local residents continue to enjoy. Later, in 2012, further renovations and additions occurred at the high school, making Decorah High School the pride of our community while creating spaces instrumental in providing excellent opportunities for students. The renovation of state of the art classrooms — including a commercial kitchen and welding, construction and small gas engine facilities — provides students spaces instrumental in offering excellent educational opportunities. The renovation of the cafeteria spaces and the addition of a new gymnasium and weight room are also beneficial to students.

Students throughout the district deserve the physical space best suited for learning, and now it’s time to focus on our early elementary students. A new, energy efficient and climate controlled building that will best serve the needs of our youngest learners will benefit students well into the future. “It takes a village” to maintain excellence in education, and Decorah has a well-deserved reputation for providing the best possible learning environments for our children. Our youngest deserve better, and now is our chance to provide them — and their teachers — the school they deserve.

There will be another vote during the general election on Nov. 5 to approve the bond proposal for construction of a new elementary school building. For now we need to vote yes to begin to secure the necessary funding to move ahead with a vision for the future.

Let’s continue to build better schools for tomorrow!
