Save the taxpayers, move the school?

By Laurie Worcester, Decorah

In light of the upcoming city council’s public hearing regarding the possible sale of city land to the Decorah Community School Board, additional options should have been entertained to also avoid support of the fiduciary responsibilities of council and board members.

One option that should have been considered: Build a new elementary school on the Dahlen property. Do not move any of the existing sports programs. This would be a savings to the taxpayer as new sports facilities would not have to be constructed. Thus, the school board should purchase the Dahlen land, and the city would not enter into any agreements.

Traffic congestion could be a problem at different times during the day, but if the entire community would work together and make slight adjustments in the workday schedule, it could definitely work. This would be a great savings to the taxpayer. That savings could then be used to fund more affordable housing.

It appears Oct. 16 is the date of the public hearing. It is important that every voice is heard. Although there are needs on every level, this is about all of us.
