Veterans remind all to respect our country

Dear Editor:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America is one of the first things young children learn during their first year when they start school. We are saddened to see that two individuals on the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors publicly lower their head/hands and do not recite the pledge at the opening of the meeting of the board of supervisors.

The Pledge of Allegiance is a patriotic recited verse that promises allegiance to the flag of the United States and the republic of the United States of America. The words and manner of delivery of the Pledge of Allegiance are currently laid out in TITLE 4 – CHAPTER 1 – Sec. 4. of the United States Code, adopted by Congress on June 22, 1942, and should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.

We’re sure they don’t hesitate to accept their pay from the taxpayers of Winneshiek County. Our hope is when the next election occurs the patriotic remember them and voice their opinion at the polls. As an elected public servant of the people, they should be setting a better example. As Veterans, we would be more than willing to give them a tour of the Veteran’s Memorial and share with them the 7,500+ names on the memorial and the price they paid for our freedom. I’m sure 100% of those Veterans would snap to attention and render a salute or place their hand over their heart during the pledge of allegiance or national anthem. Maybe these two supervisors should go back to first grade and learn some respect for our country.
