It was a perfect night for the South Winn cross country invite, held Tuesday at South Winn Golf and Country Club outside of Calmar.
The Warriors hosted numerous squads in the meet. In addition to a junior high race, there was one girls race and one boys race, with no separation between JV and varsity.

It was an early night for the Turkey Valley volleyball team (7-11, 5-2 UIC) as the Trojans defeated Central Elkader (10-18, 5-1 UIC) on the road Tuesday night 3-0. Set scores were 25-18, 26-24 and 25-17.

It was a great night to be a Warrior as South Winn (3-3, 2-2) took care of Nashua-Plainfield (4-2, 3-1) Friday night, spoiling the Huskies’ homecoming 22-14.
“We came out and established a physical, 16-play scoring drive to set the tone for the night. We missed out on a couple fourth-down plays that gave Nashua a chance to take the lead,” noted Coach Jason Ohrt. “I’m very proud of these kids right now. They just keep getting better each week.”

Using a big first quarter push toward the end zone, the Turkey Valley football team (4-2, 3-1) ran over Waterloo Christian (1-5, 1-4) who is in its first year of football.
“This was a good game for our players to bounce back from after the previous week. We played well in all aspects of the game,” said Coach Mark Scott.

Season winding down for area harriers

The South Winn and Turkey Valley cross country teams stretched their legs Saturday in a competition at Crestwood, with the Lady Warriors winning the title and the SW boys finishing third. The Trojans do not have enough competitors to score a squad in either the boys’ or girls’ divisions.

Hageman pounds out 500th kill

It was one for the memory books Tuesday evening for senior Katrina Hageman Tuesday night as the Warrior recorded her 500th career kill of her three-year varsity career. Playing West Central (2-16, 1-4 UIC, the South Winn volleyball team jumped out early and carried the momentum through to complete the three set sweep, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-21.

It all came down to a fifth game Tuesday night in Waukon.
Unfortunately for Decorah volleyball fans, the game went to the Indians, with the Vikings (12-7, 1-3 NEIC) falling 3-2 to Waukon (8-9, 1-3 NEIC). Game scores were 22-25, 12-25, 25-20, 25-17 and 10-15.

CORRECTION to paper: Roby wins

Due to an error on the scoring sheet, the sports editor inadvertently had Minnesota Vikings winning over the LA Chargers when in fact the Chargers defeated the Vikings 28-27. With the error brought to light, the results of the Pigskin Picks contest published in the Sept. 28 Public Opinion were incorrect.

The heavy rains across northeast Iowa were definitely a factor for any football team on the gridiron Friday night and it was no exception for South Winn (2-3) as they hosted AGWSR (1-4) for homecoming. The Warriors came out on top in district action, 16-14.

Fired up after a hard loss the week prior, the Decorah football team (4-1, 1-0) really wanted the homecoming win Friday night over Mason City (1-4, 0-1) and it showed with a 42-0 blanking of the Riverhawks.
