Big plays early on broke the game open for the Decorah football team Friday night in the season opener at Waukon.
With no touchdown play less than 29 yards, the Vikes dominated the gridiron to defeat the Indians, 33-0.

The South Winn volleyball team (0-2, 0-0 UIC) opened up the season at home on Thursday hosting a triangular against Dunkerton and Class 2A No. 12 Hudson. The Warriors fell short on the scoreboard, dropping both matches, but there was some high level volleyball played in the gym.

Playing focused will be the key for the Decorah volleyball team in 2024.
With five returning letter winners and a host of young hopefuls ready to wear the red and blue, the Vikings have the experience needed to have a good season. Now it’s just a matter of putting it together and staying focused when the season starts.
Putting the team together is head coach Gina Holthaus who is in her 10th season guiding the squad. Assisting her will be Jackie Hoyme.
Swimmers looking to rebuild for new season

Graduating a combined 24 athletes in 2022 and 2023, the Decorah girls swim team is focused on rebuilding the squad in 2024 with young and new swimmers to the sport.
Leading the relatively inexperienced team for the third season is head coach Loran Storts with Amy Schlake and Molly Holkesvik assisting him poolside.

The Decorah boys cross country team is looking to return to the big stage in 2024 after getting left out as a team at state the last two seasons.
The high quality of depth and experience could make the battle at the varsity level a competitive one for the Vikings, according to head coach Brad Johansen, who enters his ninth season at the helm with Tim Hayes as his assistant.

The defense will lead the way for the South Winn football team in 2024.
With a new quarterback and some new athletes on the offensive and defensive lines, the Warriors will be a little green when they take the field for the first time. However, nine veteran starters may give South Winn an edge in the district.
Overseeing the team hungry to bring home a district title is Jason Ohrt who is entering his 18th season as the head coach of the Warriors. His has a career mark of 110-64 and will be assisted by Mike Wenthold, Justin Izer and Carter Wenthold.

Looking to make the Warriors into a team to beat is fifth-year coach Alex Smith with Ethan Adams stepping in as his co-head coach for his first season.

Guiding the two squads are Kevin Kearney and Scott Conway who are both in their 31st seasons with the cross country program.

With more than 50 percent of the team comprised of first-year harriers, it will be a trial by fire experience for the Warriors this fall.

Tammy Vrzak is back for more and she hopes to keep piling up the victories for her Turkey Valley Trojan spikers this fall.
Vrzak will begin her 24th season as coach of her Upper Iowa Conference volleyball squad in 2024 and she’ll have a little help in that department as well. Ashley Walz will also return as co-head coach this year. The tandem of Vrzak and Walz took over for second-year Trojan head coach Shelbie Balk midway through the ’23 campaign.

Ten years ago, the South Winn baseball team made their debut at the state tournament in Class 2A. Now the Warriors have earned their seventh state berth, the fifth in the last six years after defeating Kee Saturday in the district final and Don Bosco in the substate game Tuesday night.
