It was a dominating performance for the Decorah Swim Team once again. After the pandemic cancelled last season, Decorah made waves in the pool Saturday, July 10, to win the Northeast Iowa Conference title with 646 points. The host, Calmar, finished fourth with 398 points.
Within the 78-event day, Decorah collected 42 golds, while CAST finished with six top finishes.
Decorah’s Elizabeth Bucksa set several new conference records in the girls’ 11-12 year-old age division, including the 50 freestyle in 30.59 seconds, the 50 butterfly in 30.49 seconds and the 100 individual medley relay in 1:18.77.
Sydney Thompson also set a new record in the girls’ 11-12 backstroke, touching the wall in 35.81 seconds.
The girls’ 11-12 age division also broke the record in both the medley and free relays. The quartet of Thompson, Clair Smedsrud, Bucksa and Lauren Luzum combined for a time of 2:26.52 in the medley relay and again in the free to win in 2:12.22.
Highlighting the Calmar Area Swim Team (CAST) day was Hannah Franzen’s gold in the girls’ 15-18 50-free in 30.19 seconds.
Landon Humpal won three individual titles, touching the wall first in the boys’ 11-12 division. Humpal raced to gold in the 100 IM in 1:22.27, the 100 free in 1:12.15 and the 50 breaststroke in 41.33 seconds.
Two wins went to Ainsley Gesing in the girls’ 8 and under division as she won the 25 butterfly in 30.56 seconds and the 25 backstroke in 27.65 seconds.
