2OT thriller for Trojans over Dons

By Becky Walz,

For the first time in school history the Turkey Valley football team (2-0) defeated Don Bosco (0-2), surviving in double overtime, 48-42, on the road.
“This was a back-and-forth game with big plays by both teams. Offensively we did a great job of mixing up the run pass to keep the defense honest. Marcus Herold did a great job of power running as the game progressed,” said Coach Mark Scott.

A recap
After a week one loss to Easton Valley, Don Bosco was looking to bounce back while TV was looking to move to 2-0.
Don Bosco got on the board early with a 29-yard run. TV came back with a Marcus Herold 11-yard carry. The two squads continued to battle back and forth with the Dons holding on to a 30-28 halftime lead.
“Defensively it took a while for the Trojans to get going. But in the second half, TV held the Dons’ offense to two scores, both off of big plays. Garrett Kurtenbach had an interception and a fumble recovery. Dylan Reicks was all over the field leading us in tackles as well as a fumble recovery. Calvin Bodensteiner knocked down a 4th down pass in the second overtime,” said Coach Scott.
The Trojans continued to battle as neither squad scored in the third period. Don Bosco pulled ahead in the fourth with a 52-yard pass play for a touchdown. TV fired back with back-to-back TDs to lead 42-36 with 1:50 remaining. The Dons invaded the end zone and knotted the score with 25 ticks on the clock remaining. The game on the line, Oliver Schmitt had a great play late in the game on a crucial two-point attempt that kept the game tied, 42-42, forcing overtime.
TV lost the coin toss in overtime and was forced to take offense first. The Trojans threw an interception on second down and was forced to hold the Dons for four plays. In the second overtime, DB went first on offense. The TV defense kept them out of the endzone for all four plays. Trojan senior Marcus Herold then carried the ball twice for the winning score.

Stat facts
Noah Hanson completed 13 passes for 142 yards and provided 54 yards on the ground for the Trojans. Herold had 21 carries for 117 yards. Leading the receivers with 63 yards in five catches was Dylan Reicks.
Defensively, Reicks posted 12.5 total tackles with seven solo takedowns. Herold was in on 9.5, while Carson Busta and O. Schmitt each were there for 4.5 tackles.
“Carson Busta, Dylan Reicks and Noah Hansen supplied the speed element to our run game. Garrett Kurtenbach along with Busta, Reicks and Herold did a nice job receiving the passes thrown by Hanson,” said Coach Scott.
On special teams, Marcus Herold did the punting and pinned DB back several times. Treyton Hulbert handled the kick-offs following the TV game plan of not kicking to their big play guys. Hanson returned several kicks giving the Trojans a solid field position to start the drives for TV.

Back at it
It will be another road game for the Trojans Friday, Sept. 10, as Turkey Valley takes on Rockford in district action.
