The Decorah boys’ basketball team (7-5, 3-3 NEIC) had a couple tight games to wrap up last week’s action, dropping a close contest to Charles City and edging Wahlert Catholic in the final minute.
Another close one
Back on their home court after several road games, Decorah came up short in its bid to claim victory over Charles City (8-3, 4-1 NEIC) Friday night, 78-69.
“Our guys battled hard, and the effort was there, we just missed a couple of key execution possessions at the end of the 1st half that cost us momentum. Give Charles City credit, they are long, and a very athletic team that is going to win a lot of games this year. We just have to keep improving with each game, not get our heads down and keep competing each day,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson.
Decorah pulled ahead early to a 13-8 lead with two minutes remaining in the first period; however, the Comets went on a 10-3 run to overtake the Vikings 18-16. The momentum stayed with Charles City in the second quarter as the Comets led 39-33 at the break. Try as they may, the Vikes couldn’t overcome the deficit in the second half.
Having a monster game with 30 points was Ben Bockman. Matthew Bockman added another 16 points in the effort, while Kaiden Quandahl put up nine. Tate Johnson had seven points and seven rebounds.

In the Vikes’ favor
Some big three-pointers in the second half were enough Saturday to shift the momentum in the Vikings’ favor as Decorah edged Dubuque Wahlert (5-7), 60-59.
“This was a great win for our team, everyone contributed, total team win, had a lot of guys step up, especially Andrew Rhodes and Ethan Holthaus doing a great job in the post on Wahlert’s big shooter,” said Coach Carlson. “We have to continue to build momentum and stay hungry.” Can’t be satisfied and continue to work each day.”
From the get-go, Wahlert players were hitting their mark as the visitors led 15-11 after the first eight minutes. Decorah picked up the pace in the second period but continued to trail 30-24 at halftime. After the break, the Vikings grabbed the momentum spurred on by a pair of back-to-back three-pointers by Kasey Krauskopf in the third as Decorah tied Wahlert 40-40 with two minutes to play. After the third, Decorah continued to trail 45-42 but the game was clearly within reach and the Vikings grabbed it.
Putting up a team-high 25 points with nine rebounds and six assists was B. Bockman. Johnson had eight points and six assists while Ethan Holthaus had eight points as well.
