A year removed from finishing third, the South Winn boys’ wrestling team is back on top of the Upper Iowa Conference, coming away with the tournament title with 227 points. In second was North Fayette Valley with 209 points followed by MFL MarMac with 191.
The Warriors hosted the event Thursday and put eight wrestlers in the finals with four winning their respective weight divisions.
“As a team we talked about everyone doing their job and if that happened we would be in good shape to win it. I am incredibly proud of this team and how they are wrestling. This team has stayed very focused on their goals and the work at hand. We look forward to finishing the season on a high note,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd.
Senior Aiden Feickert put an exclamation point on his season with his third UIC title at 113 pounds. A quarterfinal bye led to a semifinal match against Central’s Jamison Feickert who was turned over in 1:15. In the finals, the Class 1A No. 12 Warrior pinned Kade Meyer of North Fayette Valley in 2:31.
At 144 pounds, Class 1A No. 3 Collin Holm earned the title with a bye and pair of falls. In the semifinals, the SW senior threw Bryce Matt of Tripoli in 34 seconds and won his second conference title after pinning Central’s Preston Kulper in 1:05.
Winning his first UIC title was Kyle Kuboushek at 165 pounds. It took him 1:05 to put Caleb Lawrence of Clayton Ridge on his back in the semifinals. Then it was on to Quinn McGeough of MFL MarMac in the finals. There, the SW wrestler outlasted the Bulldog to win a 5-2 decision.
Parker Timp won his second conference title as well. The Class 2A No. 8 wrestler pinned Matthew Praska of Riceville in 47 seconds to advance to the final against Postville’s Sam Acevedo. In the championship bout, Timp got the fall in 1:31.
