The Decorah boys and girls track teams got a chance to see the competition Tuesday night as they competed in the Northeast Iowa Conference indoor meet at Luther College. No team scores were kept.
Coming up golden
The Viking boys had four events take first place and six come up in the silver spot.
Gavin Groux was the champion of the 55-meter hurdles with the height at 36 inches, crossing the finish line in 8.61 seconds. Second place went to teammate Tommy Sexton in 8.90 seconds. Moving the height to 39 inches, it was Dakota Johnson with the winning time of 8.37 seconds.
The 4×400 relay of Kaiden Quandahl, Brayden Hartl, Cade Olson and Dakota Johnson combined for a winning time of 3:37.71. Taking silver in 3:44.54 was a second Viking quartet, comprised of Landon Quandahl, Trevor Kuennen, Sexton and Peyton Webb.
K. Quandahl and Groux went 1-2 in the high jump for the Vikes. K. Quandahl cleared the bar at 5 feet 10 inches with Groux finishing at a height of 5 feet 8 inches.
Others finishing second for Decorah were Ben Wymer in the 55-meter dash in 6.92 seconds; C. Olson in the 200-meter dash in 24.16 seconds and the 4×800 relay of Thomas Hammel, D’mitry Lesser, Carter Dlhy and Mason Avila in 9:10.24.
“This concludes the indoor portion of our track and field season. We will keep building to improve going into the outdoor season. Hopefully, Mother Nature will be kind enough to allow athletes, meet workers and fans a chance to enjoy track and field 2023,” said Decorah boys head coach Joel Rollinger.
Four golds
The Decorah girls also had four events atop the medal stand at the end of the night with five others taking runner-up.
Senior Chloe Reiser was one of the Vikes individual gold medalists in the shot put, throwing a distance of 42 feet, 1.5 inches. Brinley Krivachek blazed her way down the backstretch in the 55-meter dash to break the tape in 7.64 seconds.
Two relays also led their respective fields including the 4×800 and 4×200. In 4×800, it was Lily Sandhorst, Danielle Losen, Lillian Olson and Paige Werner combining their talents for a winning time of 10:37.28. In 1:48.56, the 4×200 quartet of Krivachek, Kailyn O’Gara, Hayley Stowe and Lani Hubka broke the tape.
Picking up silvers for the team were Sydney Kipp in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.45 seconds; McKenzie Riley in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.64; Losen in the 800-meter run in 2:45.01; the 4×400 (Riley, Sami Mount, Sandhorst, Hubka) in 4:28.72; and the distance medley relay (Mount, O’Gara, Kipp, Olson) in 4:40.22.
“We had a good meet in a very nice facility. We continue to move athletes around and they continue to rise to the challenge. We feel that our athletes are working hard and continuing to improve,” said Decorah girls’ co-head coach Cristy Nimrod.
Outside
Both the boys and girls open the outdoor portion of the season next.
The boys are at Waukon Thursday, March 30, at 4:30 p.m. The girls kick off the season Saturday, April 1, at Cedar Rapids Jefferson at 10 a.m.
