By Becky Walz,
It was a big week for the Decorah girls’ and boys’ bowling teams as they competed at the conference team tournament and defeated North Iowa at home.
Top of the conference
The Vikes were up to the challenge Wednesday as they traveled to Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo for the conference baker tournament — with the boys’ team winning its first conference title in program history.
Leading the whole time, Decorah qualified first and never gave another team a chance. Baker scores for the 10 games were 216, 266, 205, 259, 209, 197, 177, 179, 224 and 203.
“Anytime a team throws over 90 strikes (we had 93) in a tournament, they are going to have a chance to win. The whole team was outstanding, and these kids deserve a standing ovation,” said Coach Keith Bruening.
Members of the boys’ team included Daniel Skrade, Cade Averhoff, Grady Brauer, Easton Luzum, Will Marx and Tyler Novak.
In girls’ action, Decorah came up two pins short of reaching the finals, falling to Charles City and finished third. Girls’ baker scores were 149, 176, 170, 209, 159, 159, 160, 141, 178 and 179.
“I thought we had a chance to get in the finals, but we fell short. Overall, the girls did a nice job of staying in the pock and bringing high energy to most of the games,” said Coach Bruening.
Taking to the lanes in the girls’ competition for Decorah were Rebecca Bruening, Karlie Einck, Hannah Schnitzler, Lily Iverson, Rylee Averhoff and Anika Grinna.
A win over North Iowa
Decorah came back strong again Friday with both teams defeating North Iowa at the Kingpin Entertainment Center.
In boys’ action, the Vikes defeated North Iowa, 2,994 to 2,179. Baker game scores were 246, 278, 228, 195 and 216, an average of 233 for the five games. The win moves the Decorah boys to an 8-0 record.
At the lead for Decorah was Grady Brauer with games of 172 and 238, while Easton Luzum rolled games of 203 and 169. Other varsity members on the lane included Benson Newhouse (178, 184), Cade Averhoff (190, 137), Will Marx (162, 179) and Daniel Skrade (165, 180).
The girls moved to 7-1 overall with a 2,466 to 1,932 win over North Iowa Friday. Scores of baker games were 150, 180, 159, 148 and 210.
Leading the way for the women was Rebecca Bruening with individual games of 198 and 177, followed by Hannah Schnitzler with games of 158 and 188. Also competing for the varsity squad were Rylee Averhoff (131, 105), Karlie Einck (151, 182), Sydney Hageman (134, 117) and Lily Iverson (143, 171).
“We are getting better every night, but we still have some work to do,” noted Coach Bruening.
