By Becky Walz,
It was a tale of two different days, different opponents, different weather conditions, but the same outcome as the Decorah boys’ soccer team (2-1-1) started the week with wins over Independence and Postville.
On the road
Playing at Independence (1-2) Monday night, the Vikings dominated the pitched, out-shooting the Mustangs 36-4 to come away with a 2-1 victory.
Senior Trysten Finholt nailed a goal in each half for Decorah, assisted by Ryan Johanningmeier and Jake Magner.
“We’re making improvements each game. We’re getting our spacing figured out, and taking the game a piece at a time,” said Coach Julie Simiele. “We know they love this game and are willing to put their hearts and souls into it, now we just need to find the confidence to finish the ball like we’re capable of.”
Besting the Pirates
Decorah defeated Postville (5-1) on its home pitch in less than ideal conditions with storm clouds moving in, 1-0. Of the last 12 times these two teams have come together, eight of the games have been decided by just one goal.
After a scoreless first half Tuesday night, junior Jake Magner’s corner kick to Ryan Johanningmeier was executed to perfection as Johanningmeier sent the ball into the net on a header.
Senior Bradyn Reiser claimed his first shutout of the season making four saves to secure the shutout.
“Ryan’s header off Jake’s corner was perfection. Beautifully timed, precise and exactly what we needed,” said Coach Simiele. “We aren’t quite firing on all cylinders just yet, but the guys are getting there. We’re excited for what the rest of the season has in store. Playing against Postville has historically been a dogfight for us, and this game was no exception.”
