Buchheit strikes out seven for Warriors

By Becky Walz,

The Class 1A No. 6 South Winn baseball team (1-0) opened the season at New Hampton (0-1) on Tuesday night with a 14-5 victory.
The Warriors came out of the gates strong offensively scoring two runs in the top of the first, as well as the first nine runs of the game. New Hampton made it interesting in the fifth closing the gap to 9-5 before South Winn was able to take on five insurance runs to secure the win.
Jordan Buchheit shined in the opening day start on the mound. The junior southpaw surrendered just one earned run while striking out seven in four innings. Cael Kuboushek tossed the fifth inning while Ethan Luzum closed the game striking out four in two innings of work. Logan Hageman and Briar Tigges paced a well-balanced team offense with multiple hits in the game. Tigges, along with sophomore Keagen Streeter provided to RBI in the contest as well.
“I was pleased with our offensive approach to open the game and jumping on top of a good team is always a spot you want to be in. Nine hits and eight stolen bases puts you in a position to score a big number. Our pitchers attacked the strike zone, and early in the year we really focus on not allowing free base runners and working efficiently with our pitch counts. Getting that opening day win is exciting for the team and hopefully give us momentum moving forward,” said Coach Alex Smith.
