The South Winn girls’ basketball team (3-7, 3-5 UIC) capped off the 2023 portion of the season with a win and a loss last week.

2023 finale
Facing the top team in the Upper Iowa Conference, the Warriors fell to MFL MarMac (8-3, 8-0 UIC) Thursday at home, 51-26.
South Winn fell behind early, being outscored 15-5 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs added 13 points in the second period to lead 28-8 at halftime. The Warriors scored 17 points in the second half.
Alyssa Holthaus put up eight points to lead the Warriors, as well as three rebounds. Allison Hageman was there for six points, three rebounds and two steals, while Chloe Wiltgen provided six points. Off the rim, Ella Theis led South Winn with six rebounds followed by Adele Conway and Charlotte Moonen with five apiece.

Surviving the Pirates
No team should be underestimated the Warriors found Tuesday, Dec. 19, as they battled Postville (1-10 1-7 UIC) on the road, escaping with a 41-31 victory.
“A win is a win at this point. We did a nice job battling through some tough shooting stretches all night. Our defense has been able to carry us and we forced a lot of turnovers and held them to 31 points. We do keep showing growth and we will continue to get better,” said Coach Justin Izer.
Kept off the board the first two minutes of the contest, the Warriors grabbed a 9-8 lead at the first break. However, it should be noted that SW went eight minutes without a bucket before putting up 11 points in the closing four of the first half to lead 21-15. After halftime, the Warriors maintained an advantage and held on for the win.
Wenthold put up 15 points in the contest, including a trio of three-pointers to go with three steals. Aubrey Willey put up eight and grabbed four boards.

Scoring – Wenthold 15; Willey 8; Loleta Ryan 6; Holthaus 5; Conway 3; A. Hageman 2; Adrienne Winings 2
Rebounds – A. Hageman 6; Willey 6; Holthaus 6; Theis 4; Ryan 3; Conway 2; Wenthold 2; Winings 1; Assists – Wenthold 2; Willey 2; Theis 2; Conway 1; Holthaus 1; Steals – Conway 3; Wenthold 3; Theis 3; Holthaus 3; A. Hageman 1; Blocks – Theis 1
