Oh what a night for the Turkey Valley and MFL MarMac baseball teams as the two Upper Iowa Conference squads endured two rain delays and one 11-inning game in a varsity doubleheader Tuesday night in Monona. At the end of the long night, the Trojans (0-4, 0-2 UIC) came up short, 16-2 and 5-4, to the Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0 UIC).
In game one, TV opened with a pair of runs in the first inning, plated by Logan Busta and Oliver Schmitt, but that was all the Trojans would get. The Bulldogs had the TV pitchers’ number, putting up four in the first, five in the second, four in the third and closed the game with three in the fourth to end on the mercy rule.
Five players climbed hill for the Trojans with Caleb Kurtenbach shouldering the loss and having the lone hit of the game.
The nightcap was a marathon. The Trojans utilized five walks and a single to put up three runs in the first. MFL MarMac responded with one in the bottom of the opening frame and left the bases loaded in the third before TV added one in the top of the fourth on a Busta double and singles by Schmitt and Caleb Kurtenbach. Two Bulldogs runs in the fifth and one in the sixth knotted the score 4-4 and eventually sent the game into extra innings. With both squads tired it took to the bottom of the 11th for MFL MarMac to score the win on a hit batter and single.
Busta threw for four innings, striking out eight with three others throwing in relief. TV battled for nine hits in the contest, including three by Schmitt and two by Russell Nieman.
