By Becky Walz,
It isn’t the start to the season the South Winn volleyball team (0-6) was looking for as it dropped four contests last week.
First tourney
The Warrior volleyball team traveled to New Hampton Tournament on Saturday facing some stiff competition.
South Winn dropped all three matches to Sumner-Fred (3-1) by scores of 21-6 and 21-6, New Hampton (5-0) by scores of 21-9 and 21-6 and Saint Ansgar (2-5) by scores of 21-6 and 21-12.
“We knew going into the day we would be tested against some really good offensive teams. Our defense was put to the test and we unfortunately never got settled in on the day,” said Coach Alex Smith. “Tournaments allow us to look at some different personnel throughout the day, so it was a good opportunity to get players in different positions to see where we best fit as we get set for conference play in a couple of weeks.”
Eryn Luzum led the day with 11 digs, Ali Heying had five assists, Katrina Hageman had four kills. Eryn Luzum was all 11/11 from the service area with two aces.

Five sets
A highly contested matchup between South Winn and Crestwood (1-2) went all the way to five sets in Calmar on Thursday evening. The Warriors jumped in front with the first set victory and the team exchanged victories for the first four sets. Crestwood jumped out to the early lead in set 5 and a late comeback by South Winn came up just short.
Set scores were 25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 20-25 and 13-15.
Morgan Kleve, Katrina Hageman and Avery Humpal all recorded four kills with Ali Heying dishing out 15 assists. Eryn Luzum led the way with 19 digs. Both Luzum and Humpal recorded 17 successful serves. Freshman Abby Wagner, provided a spark off the bench with five ace serves in the match.
“This was a fun night of volleyball in the gym with all three of our levels playing. It was competitive with Crestwood the entire night with our JJV and JV winning in deciding sets and the varsity coming up just short. Our girls played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. A few too many errors on the serving and attacking side of things proved to be costly in such a tight match,” said Coach Smith.
