With two games in two days the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (3-8, 3-6 UIC) battled a pair of stellar teams, falling twice.
Non-conference
The Trojans kicked off the new year against Class 1A No. 5 Riceville (12-0), dropping the contest 48-31 Thursday night on the road.
“I liked the way we attacked the basket hard. We were able to get into the lane, we just need to convert on those opportunities. We also did a good job on the boards,” said Coach Steve Hoffert.
The Wildcats rolled out to a 21-6 lead after the first frame and was in charge of the contest 33-15 at the break. While TV “won” the second half, outscoring Riceville 16-15, it wasn’t enough to cut into the lead the Wildcats had built early on.
Nine Trojans contributed at least two points, led by junior Layni Schuchhardt with eight. Annika Bodensteiner and Haylee Hanson were strong under the basket, coming away with 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

On the road
It was another long bus ride for TV Friday as the Trojans traveled to Lansing to face Kee (8-4, 7-2 UIC) in a contest that was close through three frames. Struggling to put up points in the final frame cost the Trojans the game 51-38.
Off to a promising start, the Trojans led 10-9 following the first quarter and pulled ahead 23-20 at the break. However, it was the Hawks who took control in the third 39-37 before holding TV to just one point in the final quarter.
“I thought we fought hard again, we just need to find a way to win a close game,” noted Coach Hoffert.
Annika Bodensteiner had the hot hand with 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with two steals.
Scoring – A. Bodensteiner 11; M. Throndson 8; Hanson 8; Steinlage 6; D. Busta 5
