By Becky Walz,
An early deficit was too much to overcome Friday night in the Class 3A Substate 3 quarterfinal as the Decorah baseball team fell to Maquoketa at home, 10-3.
The Cardinals (20-15) faced No. 5 Dubuque Wahlert (28-10) in the substate semifinal Monday in Dubuque.
Decorah ends the season 28-6.
“While we are extremely disappointed with this result, there are many things we are extremely proud of with this team. This group of seniors certainly deserved a better fate given the way they have prepared and dedicated themselves to each other, we simply ran into a team that really swung the bats well in this given game,” said Coach Adam Riley.
Breaking it down
It didn’t take long for the Maquoketa to get on the board with four runs crossing home plate in the first frame, including a three-run homer. The Cardinals padded their lead with three more in the second and two in the fourth, while keeping the Vikings off the basepaths for much of the first five frames.
Decorah came alive in the bottom of the sixth after Briggs Duwe was walks and Keenan Tyler singled. Back-to-back walks issued to Noah Storts and Tyler Thompson gave the Vikings their first run of the contest. A sac fly to left field by James Marx produced Decorah’s second run a fielder’s choice by Joseph Hjelle gave the Vikings their final tally of the game.
Many thanks
“Coach Hogan and I really want to thank our parents and fans who went above and beyond in the support of the baseball program at all levels. With over 70 kids involved in the baseball program this summer grades 8-12, there has been a tremendous amount of community and parent support for our young people that we greatly appreciate,” concluded Coach Riley.
Decorah has graduated 12 seniors and will look to rebuild next year with the vast numbers available. Gone will be Brady Hogan, Cael Luzum, Drew Snyder, James Marx, Briggs Duwe, Cai Brevig, Matthew Smith, Tyler Thompson, Gunnar Steine, Noah Breitenbach-Dirks, Kody Bodensteiner and Kyle Renken.
