The Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (10-5, 8-4) shouldered a tough conference loss Tuesday on the road versus Central Elkader (12-3, 9-2), 45-42.
“Our girls fought the whole way and played well defensively in terms of what we wanted to accomplish…limit the touches of their leading scorers Delaney Scherf and Haley Frieden. We did well with that but Central’s role players stepped up big for them, especially Ashlyn Scherf down low,” said Coach Carla Nymeyer. “Offensively we didn’t create well and part of that was due to Central’s defense and part of it was our lack of aggressiveness at times.”
Throughout the contest, the two squads were evenly matched with Central out front 13-11 after the first period and maintaining a two-point advantage at half, 19-17. The Warriors took a 34-27 lead into the final period and held off Turkey Valley’s quest for the win.
Jacqlyn Schmitt, Jalyssa Blazek and Aubrey Hoffert carried the offensive load. Schmitt led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Blazek contributed 12 points and six boards. Aubrey Hoffert had 10 points, while Kara Reicks provided the final four, along with four assists and eight steals.
The Trojans will close out the week with a pair of road games. TV will be at West Central Friday, Jan. 28 at 6:15 p.m. and at Maquoketa Valley Saturday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m.
