With the rain holding off the Turkey Valley boys’ golf team had a picture-perfect night for a competition Thursday as the Trojans lost by two strokes 204 to 202 to West Central. It was a boys’ only meet as the Blue Devils does not field a girls team.
Friday, the Trojans were back in action in the regular season finale at Cresco.
“The Big Rock Golf Course in Fayette is a fun course to play, and our small squad seemed to enjoy it despite the outcome,” said Coach John Reicks.
Sophomore Caleb Kurtenbach was the meet runner-up on the night with a 45. The low score of the evening was West Central’s Nathan Cushion with a 41.
Garrett Kurtenbach (47), Braylen Byrne (53), Lance Schmitt (59) and Rolin Schmitt (63) also made the short trek to Fayette.
“We just need to more consistent with our ball-striking and putting as we look forward to a busy week of golf next week,” concluded Coach Reicks.
Non-conference finale
The Trojan boys wrapped up their regular season with their best outing of the year in a 173-182 loss to the Crestwood Cadets Friday.
“It was a picture-perfect night for golf (finally) and our scores reflected that. We got a boost from juniors Oliver Schmitt and Calvin Bodensteiner who helped propel us to our lowest score of the season thus far. The kids on the course really enjoyed themselves. It was fun to see,” said Coach Reicks.
Junior Oliver Schmitt (44) had the low round for the Trojans. A double bogey on long Hole No. 4 was really his lone blemish on his scorecard. Caleb Kurtenbach (45), Garrett Kurtenbach (46) and Calvin Bodensteiner (47) also counted for the Trojans.
“Although we are still looking for more consistency from tee to green, our golf game and the weather both finally seem headed in the right direction,” pointed out Coach Reicks. “Our putting needs work as does proper club selection. Couple that with good course management and ball-striking and let’s see what happens.”
