At a size disadvantage, the South Winn girls’ basketball team (5-10, 3-8 UIC) couldn’t do much on either end of the court against Sumner-Fredericksburg (9-4) Thursday night at home.
The visitors piled up the points early to lead 39-12 at halftime. SW picked up its scoring in the second half, but not enough to put a dent in the deficit.
“Anytime we packed the lane they would kick it outside and hit a 15 foot jump shot. I saw some good things on the offensive side as we continue to grow and get better on that end. We shot a season best 7/19 from 3 so hopefully that’s something we can continue to do more consistently,” said Coach Justin Izer. “There wasn’t much we could do down low to handle the size disadvantage going against us.”
Heading up the SW offense with 10 points apiece were Josie Tieskoetter and Morgan Kleve. Tieskoetter also pulled down five rebounds, while Kleve had three. Karissa Wenthold provided another five points.
This week will be a test of endurance as the Lady Warriors play at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, Jan. 18, then have a make-up road game at West Central Thursday, Jan. 27. The week concludes at Central Elkader Friday, Jan. 27.
