By Becky Walz,
It certainly was a brutal ending to a great season by the Decorah boys soccer team Wednesday night in the substate final.
The Vikings tangled with Center Point-Urbana (12-3) at home, coming up short in overtime, 1-0.
Decorah ends the season with a 14-3 record.
CPU got the goal with little more than a minute remaining in overtime, with Decorah outshooting the Stormin Pointers, 20-7, to include shots-on-goal of 10-3.
“Decorah deserved a better result with the way we played but the ball didn’t bounce our way. I am proud of the work the boys put in all season. They did everything I asked and accepted their roles within the team. This was one of the closest teams I have ever coached and it showed in their play all season. A final record of 14-3 is something that we can be proud of,” said Coach Zachary Shearer. “I want to thank the seniors for all their time and dedication to the program and team while they were here. They have helped create a wonderful soccer culture in Decorah and have built traditions that will carry on from year to year. I also want to thank the Decorah community. The support we had in the game was amazing. You all created a wonderful atmosphere and our team is proud to represent you all.”
Decorah graduates seniors Erik Hjelle, Easton Luzum, Nathaniel Myers, Ethan Stravers, Ethan Bockman, Jake Magner, Benson Newhouse, Vinicio Ortiz, Justin Berlage, Aiden Burroughs, Franklin Lesmeister and Max Wilson.
They return varsity members Garrison Grinna, Brady Benzing, Caleb Meyer, Parker Heiselman, Jimmy Valdez, Lincoln Bishop, Will Larson, Jeramiah Rediske, Noah Milburn, Creed Monroe, Landon Kuennen, Peter Essa, Ian Giddings and Isaac Knaack.
