Decorah boys have five in double digits

By Becky Walz,

A strong effort on the defensive end of the court propelled the Decorah boys’ basketball team (2-1, 0-0 NEIC) to a big victory over Wapsie Valley in the Winter Classic held at Upper Iowa University in Fayette Saturday. After a close first quarter, the Vikings ran away with the 67-44 win.
“We came out and played with good intensity on both ends of the floor, which allowed us to be successful. I thought we shared the ball well with five players in double figures. We need to continue to improve with each game especially going into NEIC play,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson.
Wapsie Valley kept pace with Decorah in the first quarter, allowing the Vikings a slim 14-12 advantage after the first eight minutes of play. In the second period, the Vikes doubled up the Warriors’ efforts to gain a 40-26 advantage at the break. Decorah gave up four points early in the third frame to WV before shutting down the Warrior offense for the final four minutes of the period for a 55-30 lead with eight minutes to play.
Coming off the bench to lead the Vikings with 16 points was Ben Bockman. The sophomore also had six rebounds. With 13 points apiece were Jacob Pipho, Joe Bockman and Trey McCain. J. Bockman led Decorah in boards and assists with eight and five, respectively.
The Vikings have three games this week starting with Crestwood on the road tonight (Tuesday, Dec. 14). Friday, Dec. 17, Decorah will host New Hampton and Saturday, Dec. 18, the Red and Blue will compete in the Border Battle versus Rushford Peterson at Luther College at 4 p.m.
