Decorah boys outrun Blackhawks

By Becky Walz,

With the defense causing chaos and turnovers, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (1-0, 0-0 NEIC) ran away with the 62-24 win over Prairie du Chien Tuesday in the season opener.
“This was a good first win. We still have a lot to improve on, but we will continue to and hopefully get better with each game we play,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson.
From the get-go, the Vikings’ speed and quick hands forced Blackhawk turnovers which led to easy baskets as Decorah led 22-7 after the first eight minutes. By halftime the Viking lead had stretched to 37-15 and only continued to grow as Decorah held the Blackhawks to nine points in the second half for the win.
Knocking down four treys aided Joe Bockman’s team-high 15 points. Jacob Pipho and Noah Storts were also in double digits with 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Adding nine points to the tally was Carson Wemark, while Ben Bockman had eight. Also providing offense with six points was Haywood Stowe and Bennett Schutte with two points.
It will be a road game for the Vikings Friday, Dec. 3, as Decorah travels to Epworth (Western Dubuque) for a 7:30 varsity tip-off.
